Lenovo introduces gaming laptops in new Legion series

Lenovo announces a new sub-brand for gaming products: Legion. At the same time, the manufacturer is introducing two 15.6 “laptops for gamers: the Legion Y720 and Y520. The former gets a GTX 1060 GPU and the cheaper model a maximum of a GTX 1050 Ti.

The top model, the Legion Y720, will be on the market in variants with a UHD panel and a full-HD panel. All configurations include the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. As far as the processor is concerned, you can choose from the Intel Core i7-7700HQ or i5-7300HQ, both are quad-cores of the Kaby Lake generation. Lenovo supplies the Y720 with a maximum of 16GB of DDR4 memory. Storage is available in the form of a PCI-e SSD from 128GB to 512GB and a SATA HDD from 500GB to 2TB.

Optionally, the Legion Y720 can be equipped with a keyboard with RGB LEDs and a built-in receiver for an Xbox One controller. There is a USB type-c port with Thunderbolt support built-in and there are also three regular USB 3.0 connections on the housing. The laptop is 2.9cm thick and weighs about 3.2kg.

The Legion Y520 contains a maximum of one Intel processor of the Kaby Lake generation, but Lenovo does not mention which options are available. The GPU is a maximum of a GTX 1050 Ti, the cheapest variant probably has a different GPU, but it is unclear which alternatives Lenovo will offer. The DDR4 memory is up to 16GB in size and the PCI-e SSD and HDD storage options are the same as those of the more expensive model.

The Y520 has a screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, the housing is about 2.6cm thick and weighs about 2.4kg. There is a USB-C port, but it does not support thunderbolt. In addition, there are two USB 3.0 ports and there is a USB 2.0 variant.

Lenovo Legion Y520

According to Lenovo, the Legion Y520 will be available in early February for a price starting at $900. The Legion Y720 will follow in April for a price starting at $1400. It’s not clear what configurations Lenovo offers for those suggested retail prices. The manufacturer has not yet announced recommended euro prices. Converted and including VAT, the prices come down to about 1036 and 1612 euros for the Y520 and Y720 respectively.

In terms of appearance, the new Lenovo Legion Y720 and Y520 are very similar to the Y700 and Y500, which the brand has been offering in the IdeaPad series for some time. Those laptops were also intended for gamers.
