Lego releases model of NASA’s Apollo 11 lunar lander

Lego is releasing a tribute to the moon landing by the crew of Apollo 11. The company is releasing a 1,087-brick model of the lunar lander that took Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon’s surface on July 20, 1969.

The collectible consists of an apparently quite detailed replica of the Eagle lunar lander with dimensions of 20x22x20 centimeters. The model is designed so that the landing and take-off parts can be separated from each other. Furthermore, the lunar surface is recreated by an included dark gray plate and two lego astronauts including gold colored helmets are also present in the set. Their footprints are also visible on the ‘moon surface’.

The so-called modularized equipment stowage assembly of the original lunar lander is also present in the Lego model; this section can be unfolded to reveal the camera that filmed Neil Armstrong’s descent to the lunar surface on July 21. The ladder he used for this is also clearly visible in the model.

In addition, another space is included in the model, which is located on either side of the modularized equipment stowage assembly. This early apollo scientific experiment package is equipped with a toy laser rangefinder. This is a so-called laser ranging retrofinder, a device that actually consists of a hundred mirrors and is still used to measure the distance from the moon to the earth.

The NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander is available from Saturday via the Lego web store and costs 100 euros. By the way, Lego already released a model of the Saturn V rocket in 2017 with which the astronauts reached the moon in 1969. In addition to the rocket, this model also has a miniature version of the Eagle and is still for sale for 130 euros.
