A British insurer reports that the number of claims made by consumers last year due to accidents and damage caused by the use of VR glasses increased by 68 percent in five years.

Insurer Aviva tells The Guardian Last year there was a 31 percent increase in the number of claims. Since 2016, it is even an increase of 68 percent. The company says such increases are more likely to be seen as certain games and gadgets become popular. In the past, for example, Aviva has also seen an increase in the number of claims with certain fitness games.

The average amount claimed in the United Kingdom last year was 650 British pounds, converted about 777 euros. It is not clear whether this average amount of damage has increased compared to previous years.

The damage is mainly caused by broken and damaged television screens. For example, the insurer mentions an example of a player who threw a VR controller at his television when a zombie jumped on him in a game. Claims are also made for other items and devices that suffer damage, because players in their VR world have to make certain arm movements, for example, and unexpectedly hit something in the physical space in which they are located.

Aviva hints that this trend of an increasing number of claims will continue into 2022. That is not illogical, given reports of the increasing popularity of this product category. Last month, a research firm reported that AR and VR hardware sales in the United States were up 153 percent last year. In November last year, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon is said to have said that the Meta’s Quest 2 glasses have been delivered ten million times. He probably said that based on deliveries of the Snapdragon XR2 platform coming from Qualcomm.
