Instagram publishes 573kB Lite app

Facebook has released Instagram Lite, a light version of the social network’s app, with a 573kB installer file. That’s much smaller than the 32MB of the photo-centric network’s regular app.

Facebook is testing Instagram Lite for Android in Mexico, but has not yet put the app live for the Benelux. The app includes the option to upload photos with or without a filter and to view the feed and Stories. Features for video viewing, uploading and DMing are missing, but they are coming, the company says in the description.

It is not the first Lite app from parent company Facebook. There were Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite before. The lighter versions of apps are intended for less powerful smartphones on slower mobile networks. Facebook mainly thinks of developing countries, although users of less powerful phones in other countries can also benefit from this.

In recent years, more attention has been paid to optimizing Android apps for slower mobile networks and phones. For example, Google came up with Android Go, which contains lighter versions of all its apps. Google Maps, for example, is a progressive web app, just like Assistant.
