Half-Life: Alyx, Black Mesa are among the most successful new Steam games in March

Valve has published its monthly list of the twenty best-selling games that came out on Steam in March. This includes two Half-Life titles: Half-Life: Alyx, and Black Mesa.

Valve bases its most recent list on the sales of the games in the first two weeks after release on Steam and not on the sales or delivery figures of the individual titles. The company does not give exact figures and the games are not ranked among themselves. So it is not known exactly how high Half-Life: Alyx and Black Mesa would be on that list if there had been a real top-20 list.

In addition to Half-Life: Alyx and Black Mesa, new games such as Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Doom Eternal, and Last Oasis are also on the list. The same goes for Borderlands 3. This game first became available on Steam in March, after the title was available exclusively through the Epic Games Store for about six months. Despite the fact that it is a VR title, the presence of Half-Life: Alyx is not very surprising given the popularity of the game and the fact that the title has been very well received.

Black Mesa can be seen as a striking name in the list. The first outlines of this Half-Life remake already emerged in 2004, when two different teams based on the then brand new Source engine each wanted to create their own free remake in the form of a mod: Half-Life: Source Overhaul Project and Leak free. In the end, the two teams decided to join forces and got an official license from Valve, giving the mod makers access to the full game engine. Black Mesa is not just a graphical upgrade of the original: the Xen part is a lot more detailed and certain scenes from Half-Life are slightly different in Black Mesa.
