GoPro has announced a testing program for the Fusion. The Fusion is a compact 5.2k30 camera for 360-degree images that a select group of professional users should be able to try out in the summer.

In addition to the spherical images for VR playback, there will be an OverCapture function for creating regular videos and photos based on the images shot with Fusion. GoPro promises to make the camera compatible with existing GoPro mounts and accessories. The manufacturer does not mention the exact recording resolution, but speaks of a 5.2k camera and refers to a horizontal resolution of 5200 pixels.

The company does not say anything about the size, but does speak of a pocketable product. GoPro’s previous virtual reality product was a system with six GoPros, the Omni. Further details about the Fusion are not yet available. GoPro plans to hold a limited release at the end of this year and to reveal the price and other specs at a later date.

The American company is in financial trouble and recently had to lay off 17 percent of its staff, after previous layoffs last year. The company is trying to tap into new markets with drones, among other things.
