Google wants to add a ‘much more personal version’ of the Google Assistant to the Pixel 9 series. The Information writes this based on its own sources. Called Pixie, this new voice assistant is reportedly powered by the Gemini AI model.

Pixie must be able to perform ‘complex and multimodal tasks’, writes The Information. For example, it must be able to indicate the route to the nearest store to buy a product that the user has photographed. The assistant must also be able to retrieve data from Google services such as Gmail and Maps.

The new voice assistant should be available exclusively for Pixel products. Initially, this will only be available on the Pixel 9 series, but according to The Information, the intention is that Pixie will eventually also be available on previous phones and ‘devices such as smartwatches’.

It is not clear whether this voice assistant should serve as a replacement for the Google Assistant on Pixel devices. It was previously announced that generative AI will also be added, and last week Google let still know that a version of the Assistant with Bard integration will be released ‘early next year’. However, Google Assistant isn’t exclusive to Pixel devices. Company has already announced that the updated version will also be available for iOS devices. Code based in the beta of the Google app, the AI version should also be released on the Samsung Galaxy S23 and S24 smartphones. The Information does not mention to what extent Google Assistant with Bard and Pixie will differ from each other.

Finally, in the report, The Information also reports that Google is working on ‘glasses that can use the AI’s ability to recognize the objects that the wearer sees’. For example, this product could then “advise the user on how to use a particular tool, solve a math problem, or play a musical instrument.” According to The Information, this is still purely an ‘internal discussion’, and it is not yet clear whether Google will actually develop this product.
