The iOS version of Google Maps now also has support for an offline mode. This allows users to use the navigation in saved areas, among other things, without having an internet connection at their disposal.

Google has published the update for its iOS app, but it may be distributed to users in phases. Users can now mark a section of the map and download it for offline use. In addition to navigation, users can also look up locations on the saved map, complete with contact details and other details such as opening hours. Support for navigation by bike or on foot is still missing. A data connection is also still required for route planning via public transport. In the update, Google also added gas prices and location crowding estimates to Maps for iOS.

The Android version of Google Maps received these additions and improvements about a month ago. The American company is also working on more offline functionalities, but is not going into detail about this at the moment. Currently, Apple Maps does not have an offline functionality. Here Maps, originally owned by Nokia and likely to be owned by BMW, Audi and Daimler in the near future, also includes offline capabilities.
