Google distributes update for Play Store with ‘material design’

Google is distributing an update for the Play Store that is in line with its ‘material design’ from the upcoming Android L. The update is not reserved for Android L, but can also run on other Android versions.

The update, which can also be downloaded as an apk file, mainly adjusts the app pages: in the overview and on other pages of the Play Store, the new design does not seem to have been fully implemented yet. The design shows large graphics on the top and slightly modified buttons with installed apps.

The Play Store is one of the Google apps that will get an update in the coming months with ‘material design’, Google’s new design for Android interfaces, Android apps and web services. The design aims to implement a consistent interface across all Google-managed interfaces, with large areas and clear spot colors. Unlike other designs in recent years, material design does make use of shadows to give the illusion of depth and foreground.

Android L should be released this fall, but Google has not yet mentioned a concrete release date. Users of a Nexus 5 or Nexus 7 2013 can already try the new version as a ‘developer preview’.
