According to the American website Variety, Google is in talks with television manufacturers to provide TVs with Cast support without running on the Android TV platform. Vizio would be the first manufacturer to build in Cast support.

The Vizio televisions in question would not have software or an interface with apps, as is common with smart TVs. The devices would have support for Google’s Cast protocol and come with a tablet, which can be used as a remote control and to cast movies and music from apps on the tablet.

According to Variety, the respective Vizio TVs may hit the market this spring. Vizio is mainly active in the United States. However, Google would also be in talks with another television manufacturer about adding Cast support. It is not known which manufacturer that is.

Televisions that use Google’s Android TV support the Cast protocol. However, many manufacturers use different software for their smart televisions and then an accessory such as the Chromecast must be used to add Cast support. By building support for the protocol in televisions, this is no longer necessary.
