Gmail triggers on Ifttt will no longer work after March 31 due to changes at Google

Ifttt, a platform for automating countless actions, says that Gmail triggers will no longer work after March 31. The same goes for the ‘Create a draft’ promotion. Support will expire as Google makes changes to its API ecosystem at the end of this month.

The disappearance of Gmail triggers on Ifttt is a direct result of Project Strobe, a Google initiative to protect user data and improve APIs for third parties. Project Strobe, announced in October last year, has previously killed Google+ for consumers.

Users can check for themselves which Gmail applets will soon stop working on Ifttt via this link. Create a draft is also removed, but the Gmail actions Send an email and Send yourself an email remain intact. Ifttt stresses that the changes to Google’s API ecosystem only affect the Gmail functionality of the service; all other Google integrations will remain available as usual.

The retention of Gmail’s Send an email and Send yourself an email actions, according to Ifttt, is due to a close collaboration with Google. The curtain fell for other actions, because the integration would entail much more ‘overhead’ than before, resulting in less smooth operation for the end user. In the past, Ifttt developed most of the promotions themselves, but nowadays companies mainly make their own applets.
