GitHub is getting a way to donate money to developers to support project development. The site, which has been owned by Microsoft for some time, has announced this. The site doubles every donation in the first year.

Sponsoring developers can be done by tapping the username and then clicking the Sponsor button, GitHub says. For now, one hundred percent of the money goes to the developers, while the company doubles the donations the first year. In this way, the company wants many people to support developers.

Developers can sign up to receive donations. This is done through monthly payments. Developers can counter this with things, such as a badge that indicates who a sponsor is.

Not every developer can sign up right away, because there is a waiting list for the time being. The feature is still in beta. It’s not clear when it will open to all users and developers on GitHub.
