Various parts of the German state and politics have been the target of extensive ICT attacks on e-mail accounts. The campaign could be traced to Russian state hackers, according to Der Spiegel. The hackers penetrated the mail accounts of politicians, among others.

The attacks, the latest reported on Nov. 14, are said to have targeted politicians’ email accounts on party servers, embassies and Germany’s armed forces, Der Spiegel writes. The German internal security service, the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz, confirms that there is a new wave of attack.

The service classifies the attacks as coming from ‘Snake’ under the campaign. That group, also known as Tusla and Uroburos, has been targeting German government services for some time and is also believed to be behind an attack on the German Foreign Ministry last spring. It is suspected that the group has ties to the Russian secret service, according to Der Spiegel. The attackers entered the mail accounts, but otherwise there is no information about how the hackers carried out the attack, what they intended with it, what the loot was and what the consequences will be.
