Firmware Update: Synology DSM 6.0 Build 7274 Beta 2

Synology has released the second beta release of version 6.0 of Disk Station Manager. Synology DSM is the management software that runs on several of the company’s NAS products. The Disk, Cube and Rack Stations offer more than just extra storage space. For example, backups of all clients on the network can be made and files can be downloaded via http, ftp, bittorrent, usenet and emule, so that, for example, energy-hungry PCs can switch off at night while the download just comes in. Furthermore, audio and video files can be streamed over the network via the built-in iTunes server, a dynamic website can be hosted using PHP and MySQL and the device can act as a print server.

To be able to install version 6.0, at least version 5.2 must be present. Furthermore, it is only suitable for the NAS models whose type number ends with 11 or higher. In version 6.0 we find improvements in Cloud, Note, Photo and Video Station, there is a collaboration drive for spreadsheets and the possibilities for backup and restore have been improved. Also, DSM is now fully 64-bit and therefore performance improvements can be observed. In addition, there are several new features for high-performance models, including support for the btrfsfile system, a comprehensive webmail client and email server, a Load Balancer, a Document Viewer, and Docker support has also been improved.

In beta 2, mainly the sharp edges of beta 1 have been fixed. For example, Surveillance Station can be used again, something that was missing in beta 1. Service Modularization

• Some of the DSM built-in features have been modularized into packages to ensure better system maintenance and update flexibility.
• Modularization in DSM 6.0 Beta 2 includes Log Center (with basic built-in functions in DSM and extensive functions via package download), WebDAV and Snapshot & Replication.

File Station

• Supports mounting NFS shared folders on folders on Synology NAS.
• Aviary photo editor is introduced to replace the existing service for a more intuitive interface.
• Multiple files can be downloaded without being compressed into one giant file on Chrome browser (on Windows computers only).

Content Search

• You can now enjoy Spotlight search on Mac once the mounted folders are indexed in DSM.

Security

• CSS support can effectively prevent XSS attacks.
• TLS/SSL profiles can be adjusted according to your browser compatibility and security requirements.
• Root account is replaced by administrators group credentials to log into SSH to enhance security.

Certificate

• The integration of Let’s Encrypt helps provide your Synology NAS with secure connection easily and effortlessly.
• Multiple certificates are now supported to increase the flexibility for hosting several different hostnames.

• You can now add and manage your most frequently used devices as trusted devices without entering verification code every time you log in.

High Availability Manager

• Improved cluster upgrade efficiency.
