Firmware Update: Synology Disk Station Manager 5.1 build 5022.2

Synology has released a new version of Disk Station Manager 5.1. Synology DSM is the management software that runs on several of the company’s NAS products. The Disk, Cube and Rack Stations offer more than just extra storage space. In this way, backups of all clients on the network can also be made and files can be downloaded via http, ftp, bittorrent, usenet and emule, so that, for example, energy-hungry PCs can switch off at night while the download just comes in. Furthermore, audio and video files can be streamed over the network via the built-in iTunes server, a dynamic website can be hosted using PHP and MySQL and the device can act as a print server.

To be able to install version 5.1, at least version 5.0 must be present. This update can be installed on nas models ending in 10 or higher, which is an improvement, because the first release of DSM 5.1 still required at least one model ending in 11. In version 5.1, we find several improvements to the security on. For example, there is a security advisor that warns you about unsafe settings and the Application Armor kernel security module is now enabled by default. Version 5.1 build 5022 update 2 fixes a number of security vulnerabilities.

Fixed Issues

• Implemented fixes related to the GHOST vulnerability (CVE-2015-0235).
• Upgraded PHP to 5.5.21 to address multiple vulnerabilities (CVE-2015-0231, CVE-2014-9427, and CVE-2015-0232).
