Nikon has for its D3 DSLRs released new firmware with 2.02 as the version number. The firmware can be downloaded via Mac OS X and Windows be placed on the camera. These cameras have an FX-format cmos image sensor with 12.1 megapixels on board and can be equipped with interchangeable lenses. The list of changes for this update is as follows:

About this firmware update

This download updates the D3’s firmware to version 2.02. When you perform this firmware update, you must update both firmware A and firmware B. Proper operation of the D3 cannot be guaranteed if the A or B firmware has been updated while the other firmware has not been updated.

The following improvements have been made in A and B firmware version 2.02.

  • The automatic white balance has been improved.
  • Support for 64 GB memory cards has been added.
  • When ISO Sensitivity Setup>Auto ISO Sensitivity Setup in the shooting menu is set to On, the Maximum Sensitivity option can now be set in steps of 1/3 EV, 1/2 EV, or 1 EV, depending on Custom Setting b1ISO step size .
  • The time the camera waits before adjusting focus in response to sudden changes in subject distance can now be set to 5 (Long), 4, 3 (Normal), 2, or 1 (Short) via Custom Setting a4 FocusTracking with lock on. With the proliferation of customization options a4 Focus Tracking with Lock-On, this item will be set to 3 (Normal) after firmware upgrade. You can adjust this setting to your liking.
  • The Dynamic AF Area option has been added to the FUNC. button+ dials item (Preview + command dials, AE-L/AF-L + command dials) of Custom Setting f4 Assign FUNC. button (f5 Assign preview button, f6 AE-L/ AF-L button assign).
  • If AF-ON is selected for Custom Setting a9 AF-ON button or a10 Lower AF-ON button, the monitor will now turn off when the AF-ON button is pressed, even if shooting information is displayed.
  • If AF-ON is selected for Custom Setting f6 Assign AE-L/AF-L button>Press AE-L/AF-L button, the monitor will now turn off when the AE/AF lock button is pressed, even if shooting information is displayed.
  • The Set camera clock via GPS item has been added to the GPS option in the setup menu. If Yes is selected, the date and time data obtained through a connection to a GPS device is used to set the camera’s internal clock. After you select Yes for the first time, you must turn the camera off and on again to retrieve the GPS data.
  • When Enable is selected for GPS>Meter off in the setup menu, the time before the meters turn off is now extended by up to one minute, allowing the camera to acquire GPS data immediately after the camera is turned on and immediately after the meters are turned off. enabled (only with GPS unit GP-1).
  • If On is selected for Noise Reduction slow shutter speed, problems occurred when shooting at a shutter speed greater than 1 sec. but less than or equal to 8 sec. This problem has now been resolved.
  • The issue that caused the focus point to not be displayed when playing back images shot with continuous shooting has been resolved.
  • When certain memory cards were inserted into the camera, “CHA” was displayed in the top control panel and images could not be captured. This problem has now been resolved.

Warnings for Camera Control Pro 2 users

  • These firmware versions are not fully compatible with Camera Control Pro 2 version 2.7.0 and earlier. Some new menu options are not available after the firmware update has been performed.
  • Camera settings data saved before the upgrade cannot be loaded after the new firmware is installed.

These issues will be resolved in Camera Control Pro 2 version 2.7.1 which is expected to be released in the near future.
