Facebook has released an update for Instagram, making it possible to chat with Facebook users from within the app. Later it should also be possible to chat with WhatsApp users.

The update was spotted by The Verge, who detailed the changes to the Instagram chat. The biggest change is that after installing the update, users will be able to chat from their DMs in Instagram with users who are on Facebook Messenger. In addition, the update provides more color settings, more emojis and a new ‘swipe to reply’ function.

The necessary update will probably be released in phases, so in some cases it may take a while for the software to arrive on the device. After the update, the icon for dm’s within Instagram has been replaced by that of Facebook Messenger.

Previously, WhatsApp, also a Facebook subsidiary, already released a beta in which Messenger Rooms was integrated. These are steps towards full integration of the chat services between Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp; Facebook has already indicated at an earlier stage that it wants to integrate the chat services of all its social media.
