There will be no E3 this year. Organizer ESA announced this in a statement. It was previously announced that there would be no physical E3 fair this year, but it was still said that a digital version might be coming. E3 should return in full next year.

The news was initially announced by Razer PR employee Will Powers, who wrote on Twitter that he received an email officially canceling E3 2022. IGN reported that it has also seen a cancellation email from the ESA. The organizer then confirmed that news to that platform.

The game fair was first planned for mid-June and would be a physical event, but in January the organizer announced that those plans were canceled due to the corona pandemic. The ESA then indicated that it would come up with more information ‘soon’, but said it was positive about the possibilities of organizing a digital E3. This is also not going to happen, it has now been confirmed.

The ESA tells IGN that E3 will return next year as a “renewed” showcase, to take place both physically and digitally. “We will devote all our energies and resources to delivering a revitalized E3 physical and digital experience next summer. We look forward to presenting E3 2023 live from Los Angeles to fans around the world.”

The fate of E3 has been questioned for several years now. More and more companies are withdrawing from the stock exchange. They then choose to hold their own digital showcase in the summer, such as Sony with its State of Play and EA with Play Live. Due to the corona pandemic, E3 had to be canceled in 2020 and last year’s edition could only take place digitally.

Geoff Keighley took advantage of the news to confirm that Summer Game Fest will go ahead this year. That event is set to start in June. Keighley says he can share more about Summer Game Fest 2022 in the coming weeks.
