DSCC: Apple wants to place camera and Face ID behind the screen in iPhone Pro in 2027

Apple would like to provide the iPhone Pro in 2027 with a selfie camera and Face ID module behind the screen. That claims DSCC analyst Ross Young. In that year, the standard iPhone still has a hole for the camera, but Face ID under the screen.

Young posted a rendering of a roadmap of what Apple wants to do with the screens of iPhones in the coming years. All iPhones will have an LTPO screen from 2025, something that the Pro iPhones will have from 2021. From then on, a variable refresh rate will probably be possible on the phones. Young states on Twitter that the basic models will also receive a 120Hz refresh rate. Currently, that feature is limited to iPhone Pro devices; the entry-level models have a 60Hz screen.

This year’s iPhone 15 models will get a Dynamic Island just like last year’s Pro models, says Young. From 2025, Dynamic Island would make way for a smaller camera hole in the Pro models. The Face ID hardware for facial recognition would then be under the screen, while the camera hole should only house the selfie camera.

Young is considered a trusted screen development analyst. Its track record on unannounced smartphones is virtually flawless.
