Dixons Carphone raises number of people affected by data breach to 10 million

The British Dixons Carphone released new figures on Tuesday about the size of a previously reported data breach. The company believes there may have been access to personal data in 10 million records. Initially, this involved data from 1.2 million people.

In a statement to investors, the company writes that after an investigation it came to the number of 10 million and that the data breach took place in 2017. It does not say what kind of personal data is involved. The previously reported data of 1.2 million people involved data such as names, addresses and e-mail addresses. The company reports on the new number: “While there is now evidence that some of this data has left our systems, these records contain no information about payment cards or accounts and there is no evidence that fraud was committed as a result.”

The company warned in June that a data breach had occurred due to unauthorized access to customer data. This also included 5.9 million credit card details. Dixon’s Carphone said the vast majority of cards were protected with a chip and a PIN. There was also access to 105,000 unsecured cards from outside the EU. The electronics retailer was also targeted by attackers in 2015, who then managed to steal credit card information from 2.4 million customers.
