Disney announced quite a bit of new content during Disney Investor Day 2020, including the arrival of the next Star Wars feature film. The film, called Rogue Squadron, will be released in December 2023 and is about the eponymous group of elite pilots of the rebels.
Disney reports that Rogue Squadron will be released in December 2023 and that the film will be directed by Patty Jenkins. She is responsible for the Wonder Woman films, among other things. On Twitter she says in a short teaser video that she has the ambition to make Rogue Squadron “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.” Then she dons a helmet from the rebel pilots from the Star Wars movies and walks on an airport to an X-Wing standing on the runway, surrounded by regular planes.
Lucasfilm announces on StarWars.com that the Rogue Squadron film will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots to the stage where they earn their stripes and risk their lives in a ‘groundbreaking high-speed thrill ride’. The film will maneuver the saga into a future era. Furthermore, little further details about the film are given.
Rogue Squadron is the name of a squadron of Rebel Alliance fighter pilots founded by Luke Skywalker during the Galactic Civil War. In the Star Wars films, this group can mainly be seen during the Batlle of Hoth in The Empire Stikes Back. Although the name Rogue Squadron will probably also sound familiar to gamers. In 1998 the game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was released. In that game, players have to crawl into a variety of planes and complete missions that take place between the original Star Wars movie and the subsequent The Empire Strikes Back movie.
Disney has also announced many more new Star Wars content, including a series called Andor, which will appear on Disney + in 2022. It will be a spy thriller in which actor Diego Luna again plays the role of rebel spy Cassian Andor from the movie Rogue One. Andor production started three weeks ago in London.
Furthermore, more information has come out about Obi-Wan Kenobi. This series is about the jedi knight of the same name, but will also feature actor Hayden Christensen who will once again take on the role of Anakin Skywalker or rather Darth Vader. Production for this series is due to start in May next year and the events take place ten years after the events of the movie Revenge of the Sith.
