Development studio uses royalty-free Mickey Mouse in horror game Infestation 88

Developer Nightmare Forge Games has announced Infestation 88: a survival co-op horror game in which monsters must be fought. One of those monsters is based on Mickey Mouse, which has become royalty-free since January 1, 2024. The game will be released in 2024.

Nightmare Forge Games shared a trailer on YouTube and it turns out that as a player you play as a pest controller who has to fight some ‘sinister pests’. Those plagues are said to have been caused by well-known characters or figures from urban legends. The trailer shows that Mickey Mouse was one of the inspirations and that this character also appears in the game. The black and white version of this animated character has become public domain in the United States since January 1. As a result, Disney has lost copyright protection in certain cases.

Infestation 88 would according to the associated Steam page coming to PC in 2024. Nightmare Forge Games has not released any games in the past. The studio in his own words consist of experienced employees who specialize in creating horror games. It is not clear exactly what these are.
