A number of developers on Kickstarter have announced Console OS, an Android fork that can run on desktop PCs with x86 processors. Among other things, OpenGL ES 3.1 is supported, so that Android games would also run smoothly.

Console OS is a fork of Android 4.4 and according to the makers can be operated entirely with mouse and keyboard. Console OS also supports dual boot, so that the operating system can be installed alongside Windows, for example. The OS would have been successfully working on various tablets and laptops with an Intel CPU. Among others, the Transformer Book T100 from Asus, various XPS models from Dell and the Intel NUC systems are officially supported.

The operating system does not yet offer access to the Google Play store, but the makers promise that purchased apps are easy to import. We are also working on tools to quickly switch between Windows and Console OS. OpenGL ES 3.1 is already supported, making Android games playable on a normal PC or laptop.

The makers, who have been working on Console OS for 18 months, hope to raise enough money on Kickstarter to make the Android fork interesting for PC manufacturers. Whoever donates 10 dollars is entitled to the Pro version with lifetime updates. The makers promise to release a first version of Console OS for developers one month after the Kickstarter collection expires.
