Developer Releases Unreleased Rayman Game Level For SNES

More than 24 years ago, Frenchman Michel Ancel created a Rayman test game for the SNES. He thought he had lost the EPROM, but found it again. A friend of his is now releasing a level of the unreleased game.

The first Rayman game was originally supposed to be released as a cartridge for the SNES, but Ubisoft decided to release the game on CD-ROM in 1995 for new consoles such as the PlayStation and Sega Saturn, in addition to a cartridge version for the Atari Jaguar. Graphics cartoon professionals were called in for that version, making the final game visually different from the game originally created by French creator Michel Ancel.

Ancel revealed a screenshot of that version last year, sadly saying that the game has been lost. Apparently, the developer continued to search, because four days later he happily reported that the eprom was justified. Quite unexpectedly, another developer, Omar Cornut, posted a level of the test game on Monday available through Dropbox. He simply requested the cartridge from Ancel and was given permission to release the devbuild. The original Rayman can be run with SNES emulators.
