A developer has gotten dual screen support up and running on a custom rom based on the ARM version of Windows 10 on the Microsoft Lumia 950XL. Until now, that was only possible on Windows 10 Mobile.

Developer Imbushio leaves the dual screen support seen in a tweet. The first screen is the OLED display of the phone itself and the second screen is a monitor. That monitor is connected via the Display Dock that Microsoft released with the Lumia 950 and 950XL in 2015. That worked with Continuum, the desktop mode of Windows 10 Mobile.

The function of Continuum to control two screens at the same time from the Lumia, was not included in the custom rom based on the ARM version of Windows 10. That custom rom was released last year. Imbushio put the support in by adding drivers to support a second screen. The Microsoft Lumia 950XL came out at the end of 2015 and was Microsoft’s last Windows 10 Mobile top model. The phone came with a Snapdragon 810 and 3GB of RAM.

Microsoft is also working on dual screen support on smartphones. The company will be releasing the Surface Duo next month, an Android phone with two screens. It has an unlockable bootloader, so that opens the door for custom ROMs. It is still unclear whether there will be a custom rom based on the ARM version of Windows 10.
