Debian 8.0, codenamed Jessie, should be available as a final on April 25th. Developer Niels Thykier of the Debian Release Team made the announcement on the Linux distribution’s mailing list.

According to Thykier, the members of the development team behind Debian have agreed that an April 25 release of Jessie is feasible. There are still a few dozen bugs to be fixed before Debian 8.0 can be released. This must be done before April 18. Only if critical bugs are found will the planned release on April 25th not go ahead.

Debian 8.0 Jessie promises, among other things, improved multimedia capabilities. For example, a lot of media software has been updated and an ‘XBMC for Debian’ package is available. In addition, the Linux distribution includes an improved installer called Jessie Installer. Furthermore, the user can now install the Cinnamon and Mate desktop environments and there is support for Docker. Also new in the repositories are Owncloud, https-everywhere in Firefox and the ‘needrestart’ tool that can be used to check whether certain services need a restart after an update.
