Daedalic Entertainment has published a sneak peek of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which is set to release in 2022. It is a stealth game in which the player can choose in certain parts to play Gollum or Smeagol.

In the less than half-minute long teaser, the German developer shows Gollum sneaking through the caverns of Barad-dûr, dodging enemies and being hunted by spiders. He crawls on all fours and climbs high edges to remain unseen.

According to Eurogamer, who got a look at the pre-alpha version of the game, Gollum isn’t worth much in combat, but he can sneak up on opponents from behind to take them out, albeit with some noise. Depending on situations, players can choose whether to act as the somewhat vicious and deceitful Gollum or the fearful and compliant Smeagol to escape.

At the announcement in 2019, the developer told Den of Geek that the story revolves around Gollum’s experiences at the time of what is described in Tolkien’s books, but that the game is filling in gaps in its storyline. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released in Q3 2022 for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
