Cyanogen is shutting down WhisperPush encrypted messaging service. The encrypted messaging system is an option in the Messaging app. Cyanogen refers to unspecified issues as the reason for the service’s discontinuation.

Messages can be sent via WhisperPush until February 1, but the service will no longer work after that, the company says. All devices running CyanogenMod 10.2 through CM12 may be affected by the decision. WhisperPush is not included by default in CM13, the CyanogenMod release based on Android 6.0.

Cyanogen cites “longstanding registration problems” and “problems with various countries” as reasons for the shutdown. In addition, the American company refers to the costs of WhisperPush, including the costs for verification text messages and servers.

Users who want encrypted chat can turn to Signal, says Cyanogen. Signal is from Open Whisper Systems, who also made the system behind WhisperPush. Signal is a standalone app, while WhisperPush can work from the Messages app on the phone. WhisperPush has been around for about two years.
