A laptop manufacturer is working on a Chromebook with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U. It is the first Chromebook with an AMD Ryzen 5000 processor, but it is not yet known when the laptop should appear.

The Chromebook what Chrome Unboxed benchmarks could run on, contains an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. The site does not disclose the manufacturer of the laptop. It would still be a pre-production model.

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800U is not a new processor. AMD announced these in early 2021. At the end of 2020, there were already indications from Chromium repositories that manufacturers were working on Chromebooks with Ryzen 5000 processors, but these have not appeared until now.

According to Chrome Unboxed, the problem with Chromebooks with Ryzen 3000 processors was that performance could drop by up to 40 percent when used without AC power. With Ryzen 5000 chips, that would matter less.

According to Chrome Unboxed, the pre-production model with Ryzen 7 5800U scored 70,287 points in the JavaScript benchmark Octane. A Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga Chromebook with AMD Ryzen 5 3500C scored last year at TechRadar in that test 37,916 points. AMD will provide its processors for Chromebooks with a C suffix from 2020 onwards. So the Chromebook could show up with a Ryzen 7 5800C mention.
