Classic Angry Birds game without microtransactions disappears from Google Play
Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, the remade version of the classic Angry Birds game from 2009, will disappear from the Google Play store. The title has no microtransactions, unlike Rovio’s Angry Birds 2 game, which remains available.
Rovio says on Twitter that it reviewed the business case of Rovio Classics: Angry Birds and decided to remove the game from the Google Play Store due to “the game’s impact on our wider games portfolio.” This will happen on Thursday. The title will not disappear from the App Store; there the game gets a different name that probably makes the title more difficult to find, namely Red’s First Flight. That decision regarding the iOS version is still under review.
Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will continue to be playable for those who have already downloaded the game, but new purchases and downloads of the Android version will no longer be possible from February 23. The title can also be found as Rovio Classics: AB in the Play store. This is the only version of the classic game available.
A community manager gives a somewhat cryptic answer to a question about why the company isn’t just keeping the game. He argues that Rovio Classics: Angry Birds has a negative impact on the other games and that the company should focus on that. “If those other games don’t improve and grow, the outlook of the entire company changes. It’s harder to create new games or work on new projects.”
There are players of Rovio Classics: Angry Birds who suggest that Rovio remove the game from the Google Play store because this title is too popular, thus keeping customers away from Rovio’s other games, such as Rovio’s Angry Birds 2. That title will just stay available and is free-to-play and includes in-game purchases. This is in contrast to Rovio Classics: Angry Birds; this game costs 1.19 euros and has no microtransactions. Rovio probably expects to be able to earn more with Rovio’s Angry Birds 2 after Rovio Classics: Angry Birds is gone, or so the thought goes.
