Cathay Pacific warns of data theft of 9.4 million passengers

Criminals managed to break into Cathay Pacific’s IT systems and steal data from 9.4 million airline customers. This includes passport numbers and travel details.

The theft of the data took place after the intrusion of “single information systems containing passenger data of 9.4 million people,” according to Cathay Pacific, without reporting how the attack took place and when it was discovered. However, the airline would have taken action ‘immediately’. Among other things, an undisclosed security agency has been engaged and additional security measures have been implemented.

During the theft, data about nationality, date of birth, telephone number, e-mail address, passport number, identity card number, frequent flyer number and travel details were stolen. In addition, it concerns numbers of 403 expired credit cards and 27 credit cards without CVV. The company reports that it has not yet encountered any abuse in practice.
