Activision Blizzard has released its second quarter results. This shows that Blizzard in particular has considerably fewer monthly active players compared to the same quarter last year.

Blizzard’s games had 37 million monthly active players in the past quarter, according to the quarterly figures. Last year there were 46 million in the comparable quarter. It is not clear why the number of players is declining. It concerns games such as Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Starcraft and Hearthstone.

King, the mobile division of Activision Blizzard, also saw a decline in the number of active players. In the second quarter of last year, King had 314 million monthly active players, now there are 270 million. At Activision, the number of monthly active players decreased slightly, from 47 to 45 million. In total, the combined company had 352 million monthly active players, up from 407 million a year earlier.

The figures are not specified by game, but according to Activision Blizzard, Call of Duty: WWII and Call of Duty: Black Ops III were important success factors in not letting Activision’s monthly active players drop too much. By June, Call of Duty: Black Ops III would have had 15 million monthly active players. According to the company, the number of pre-orders for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 looks good.

Blizzard also underperformed in terms of revenue and profit. The company had a turnover of $489 million, compared to $566 million last year. Profits came in at $133 million, compared to 225 million a year earlier. King and Activision mostly showed slight increases. In total, sales amounted to $1.64 billion, which is virtually the same as a year ago. The profit came in at 402 million dollars, compared to 243 million dollars a year earlier.

Activision Blizzard performed well in terms of revenue from in-game purchases, which are known as in-game net bookings, with the company raising a total of $1 billion thanks in part to both Call of Duty titles and Destiny 2. Last year it was about the same.
