Beta WhatsApp shows feature for notification to leave group conversation

WhatsApp seems to be working on a feature to remind users to leave a group conversation. Users can set themselves when that notification should come. That should keep users’ inboxes cleaner than they are now.

WhatsApp Expiring Groups

The feature is called Expiring Groups, reports WABetaInfo, and can be found in the settings of a particular group. When the function is on, it is possible to receive a notification after a day, a week or on a self-chosen date. At that moment a message appears to leave the group.

Expiring Groups only works on the user’s side, so it doesn’t affect the rest of the group’s participants. The function seems mainly intended for group conversations that have a clear end goal, such as groups for a certain event or birthday. Now Meta’s chat app has no built-in way to remind users to delete old groups.

It is still unknown if and when the function will appear in the stable version of WhatsApp. Usually this happens a few months to a year after the first signs appear in beta versions. The feature is in the beta for iOS, version 23.5.0.70.
