Audi and Volvo have announced that they will install an infotainment system that runs on Android in a new generation of cars. Volvo says it will integrate a new generation of the control system into new Volvo models within two years.

Volvo has announced this. Volvo’s announcement includes a new infotainment system that will run on Android, without the need for a mobile phone. This is probably an on-board computer that runs on Android 7.0. This is not about the integration of Android Auto via the smartphone, which is already supported by 300 different cars. Android Auto is a system that makes it possible to connect an Android phone to the screen of a car dashboard.

The infotainment system in the new Audis and Volvos will give drivers the ability to control the air conditioning, sunroof and windows, among other things. The new Android system will control both the central touchscreen and the digital dashboard behind the wheel. Google Assistant will also be available, in addition to all the apps and functionalities already available through Android Auto. According to The Verge, Google has said the new system will not yet be responsible for monitoring the car’s safety systems.

In January, Google and Fiat Chrysler presented a Chrysler car at CES whose infotainment system ran on a system that was a combination of Android 7.0 and the carmaker’s proprietary UConnect infotainment system. Google has also previously shown quite extensive integration in a Maserati, but that was a concept and the car still ran on Android Auto.

Volvo is also working with Google to integrate Google Local Search into recent Volvo models. Volvo drivers with Sensus navigation will receive this application with the next update.

Google has announced the partnership with both car manufacturers. A preview of the system will be shown at Google’s own developer conference I/O, which will be held from May 17 to May 19 in the US.
