Apple wants suppliers to make batteries for its iPhone 16 models in India, business newspaper Financial Times reports. Japanese supplier TDK recently opened a battery factory in India.

Apple has expressed its preference for India as a place to make batteries to suppliers, reports FT. The iPhone maker is trying to get suppliers like Desay to open factories in India, while Taiwan’s Simplo Technology can scale up its production in India, according to Apple. Not all iPhone batteries come from the country. If production of batteries for the iPhone 16 goes well, Apple would like to have more batteries made in India.

The electronics maker wants to be less dependent on China in the production of iPhones. This reduces risks, because with production spread across China, India and Vietnam, there is no single government with much power over Apple. This dependence affected Apple, among other things, during the corona pandemic, when Chinese factories largely came to a standstill due to measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
