Apple is said to be at the negotiating table with some American news publishers. The tech giant would like access to the news archives of these publishers to advance the development of its own generative AI model.

According to The New York Times Apple is currently in discussions with Condé Nast, NBC News and IAC. Condé Nast is the publisher behind The New Yorker, Wired, Ars Technica, GQ, Pitchfork, Vogue and Vanity Fair, among others. IAC is the company behind People and Daily Beast, among others. According to some anonymous sources, Apple would like to reach a deal that will apply for several years. The company would pay approximately $50 million for this.

Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Apple was working on its own language model, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, Bloomberg news agency believes that Apple does not yet know how it wants to use the technology. Some Apple researchers also published a paper earlier in December in which they proposed a solution to run large language models on mobile devices, such as an iPhone. The company would also like to add AI to Siri, Xcode and Keynote.
