Apple has added support for passkeys when signing in with an Apple ID in the beta versions of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma. This makes it possible for beta users to log in to Apple services without a password.

Currently, it is only possible for beta users to log in to Apple web addresses such as icloud.com and appleid.apple.com with a passkey. Passkeys will become generally available when these operating systems are officially released in the fall. Users with an Apple ID will then automatically be assigned a passkey. It should then be possible to use passkeys on any site where users can log in with their Apple ID, such as Spotify and Reddit.

With passkeys, users no longer have to enter a password. It will then be possible to log in with biometric data, such as a fingerprint or facial scan. To do this, users must choose ‘Sign in with iPhone’ when logging in to their Apple ID. A QR code will then appear that they must scan with their iPhone. They can then use Face ID or Touch ID to log in.

Passkeys were introduced a year ago by the FIDO Alliance. This passwordless way of logging in would be more secure, because passwords could easily be stolen. In addition to Apple, Google and Microsoft, among others, also work with passkeys. Apple previously made it possible to store passkeys in the iCloud Keychain on iPhones with iOS 16. However, logging in to Apple ID still required a password.
