Apple isn’t releasing its AirPower wireless charger. The manufacturer says that after much effort, the product failed to meet its standards and that the project has been cancelled. Apple announced the charger in September 2017.

Apple statement

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have canceled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”

Dan Riccio
Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering

The deletion of the AirPower has been confirmed by Apple in an email, TechCrunch writes. In the email, Apple also apologized, stating that “the future is wireless.” It is not known whether a new wireless charger in a different form is being worked on.

Apple announced the mat designed to wirelessly charge multiple devices at the same time in September 2017, at the launch of the iPhone X and iPhone 8. Since then, things have been quiet around the AirPower and the introduction of the iPhone Xs models in 2018, Apple did not mention the product at all.

Last year, through conversations with Apple employees, it was revealed that there were three different problems with the production of the AirPower. The mat would become too hot and the hardware and software of the different devices to be charged would not work together properly, which would cause the charging to fail. Also, interference would be a problem as there are different sized coils in the mat to charge different types of devices.

Users should be able to place devices anywhere on the mat and therefore the correct coils must be in each spot, causing interference. Apple itself does not provide a specific reason as to why the product does not meet its own standards.
