AMD sues MediaTek for GPU patent infringement

AMD has sued MediaTek for infringing its graphics technology patents. AMD wants to enforce in court that MediaTek pays royalties and stops infringing in the future.

AMD wants royalties from MediaTek for using its proprietary techniques in a range of products, including TVs and smart devices. AMD wants compensation for current and past infringements and a stop to further infringements, Seeking Alpha writes.

The case is a continuation of previous claims by AMD that Vizio, LG, Sigma Designs and MediaTek are infringing its patents with their chips. The US Trade Commission, USITC, investigated those complaints in 2017, and in August 2018, the conclusion was reached in AMD’s favor on at least one patent.

In fact, it’s ARM and Imagination GPUs that use AMD’s proprietary graphics technology. The manufacturers mentioned, including MediaTek, license the GPU technology from ARM and Imagination for their chips. It would be easier for AMD to sue the companies that market the actual chips instead of going after the designers of the underlying technologies, was reported at the time.
