AMD reveals first details of third-generation Ryzen CPUs

AMD has revealed the first details of its upcoming third-generation Ryzen CPUs. These should be released in mid-2019, the company announced during its keynote at CES electronics fair. The new Ryzen also supports pcie 4.0.

AMD CEO Lisa Su showed on stage a next-generation Ryzen processor with eight 7nm cores with chiplet design. The processor will fit into AM4 sockets, making it easier for customers who already own a Ryzen processor to upgrade. The third-generation Ryzen is the first processor platform for PCs with support for PCI-e 4.0, according to AMD. AMD previously released its Radeon Instinct accelerators with PCI-e 4.0 support.

AMD also showed a comparison with the Intel Core i9-9900K on stage, with the Ryzen achieving a slightly higher score in the synthetic benchmark Cinebench at lower power consumption of the entire system. The Ryzen 2700X comes on Cinebench until 1835, Ryzen 3 came in slightly above 2050. The exact hardware with which AMD did the tests is not known.

It wasn’t an announcement of the third-generation Ryzen, but Su mentioned that it was just a preview. The company plans to reveal more details about the processors as the release gets closer. That release will take place in mid-2019.
