AMD gives B450 and X470 chipsets support for Zen 3 CPUs

AMD is working with motherboard manufacturers on bios updates that will allow future processors with Zen 3 cores to run on B450 and X470 motherboards. As a result, support for older CPUs expires.

AMD is returning to an earlier decision. With the introduction of the B550 platform, the manufacturer announced that upcoming processors based on the new Zen 3 architecture will only work on motherboards with the B550 and X570 chipsets or newer, even though the new CPUs share the same AM4 socket. use.

Many users criticized the decision and AMD is now responding to that with an upgrade plan for users of B450 and X470 motherboards. There will be beta bios updates that will add support for Zen 3 CPUs. Because the SPI-ROM capacity of many motherboards from the 400 series is limited, support for ‘many’ old processors is no longer available. Also, it will not be possible to roll back the bios update.

AMD says the BIOS update will only be available to “verified customers” with a 400-series motherboard and a Zen 3 processor. How AMD wants to check this is not yet clear, but the manufacturer says that it wants to limit the risk that users provide their motherboard with a bios, so that their cpu no longer works.

Furthermore, AMD hints that the BIOS updates will probably not be available immediately with the release of the first Zen 3 processors. It is not clear how long it will take between the introduction of the new CPUs and the availability of the updates. AMD also emphasizes that 400 series motherboards will not receive updates for any new processor generations in the future.
