AMD introduces the AMD Advantage Design Framework for laptops. Manufacturers can make such laptops by meeting certain requirements. In addition to AMD GPUs and CPUs, the laptops must be equipped with at least a 144Hz screen and good cooling.

According to AMD, the Advantage Design Framework is designed to improve the entire user experience for laptop users. In addition to requirements for the hardware, there are also requirements for the cooling; for example, the wasd keys must not become warmer than 40 degrees Celsius when used.

To release a laptop as an AMD Advantage model, it must be equipped with a Ryzen Mobile 5000 series processor and a Radeon RX 6000M video card. The laptop must support AMD technologies such as Smart Access Memory and SmartShift, to distribute power between the CPU and GPU.

AMD Advantage laptops must also have a FreeSync Premium certified display with a minimum refresh rate of 144Hz and support for Low Framerate Compensation. Manufacturers can use IPS and OLED panels, provided they achieve a minimum brightness of 300cd/m² and can display 100 percent of the sRGB color space.

Furthermore, the laptops must at least be equipped with an NVMe SSD, which uses four PCI-e lanes. The battery must also be good for at least ten hours of video watching. The framework does not impose any requirements on which ports should be on the laptops.

According to AMD, the framework has been worked on for several years, in collaboration with various PC manufacturers. Intel has had a similar concept with its Evo platform for some time, but that is aimed at thin lightweight laptops. To meet that requirement, laptops must have certain connectivity options and quickly wake up from standby. Intel does not have a comparable counterpart for gaming laptops.

AMD Advantage laptops from ASUS, HP, Lenovo and MSI

As an example of a laptop designed according to the framework, AMD shows the ASUS RoG Strix G15 AMD Advantage Edition. It contains the Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and RX 6800M GPU. There is a choice of a 15.6″ screen with a refresh rate of 300Hz at a full HD resolution, or 165Hz at a 1440p resolution. The laptop uses a vapor chamber and liquid metal thermal paste and should have a battery life of 11 hours. when watching video. ASUS also comes with a RoG Strix G17 AMD Advantage Edition, featuring a 17.3″ panel. Both laptops are available immediately.

HP is the second manufacturer to release a gaming laptop according to the quality mark. This concerns the HP Omen 16, which will be equipped with a Ryzen 9 5900HX and Radeon RX 6600. This model will appear ‘soon’. Lenovo and MSI will release AMD Advantage laptops later this year, according to AMD.
