Google has formed the Android Ready SE Alliance and NXP and Thales, among others, are partners. The partners want to promote the adoption of Android for applications with hardware security, such as digital car keys.

The alliance focuses on the use of Android Ready SE in applications, where SE stands for Secure Element, hardware security that protects the integrity of user data, keys and payment information. Google itself has developed StrongBox for these applications, which uses its Titan M security chip. Google lists StrongBox as applications for digital car, home and office keys, digital driver’s licenses and identity cards, and payment services.

However, the Android Ready SE Alliance initially focuses on use for only digital car keys and driver’s licenses. Participating partners of Google are Giesecke+Devrient, Kigen, NXP, STMicroelectronics and Thales. Together they want to come up with a series of open source SE Applets that companies can use in combination with StrongBox for digital car keys and driver’s licenses. Those companies must meet a number of requirements, such as deploying hardware security for the bootloader and root-of-trust parameters.

Google emphasizes that this is not only about applications for smartphones or tablets, but also those for Wear OS, Android Auto Embedded and Android TV.
