Intel has recruited Ali Ibrahim, a man who spent thirteen years at AMD, working on the Xbox’s system-on-a-chips, among other things. Ibrahim joins Intel’s Architecture, Graphics and Software division.

Ali Ibrahim joined Intel this month as vice president within the Intel Architecture, Graphics and Software group, which will include leading the platform architecture and engineering teams for discrete GPUs. This concerns the Xe GPUs that Intel is working on.

Intel has confirmed the arrival of Ibrahim to CRN and the manufacturer also reports that this is part of the work on Xe graphics. He left AMD in March and held various positions there. Among other things, he was architect responsible for AMD’s cloud gaming and system-on-a-chips work for Microsoft’s Xbox console, including the Series X. He was also lead architect for consumer systems apus and led a team for socs for single gpus.

In recent years, Intel has hired several AMD veterans for its Xe GPU. That started with the transfer of Raja Korduri in 2017. He previously led the Radeon Technology Group at AMD. Masooma Bhaiwala also made the switch. At AMD she was involved in the development of semi-custom GPUs for consoles and semi-custom apus and asic designs. In 2018, Intel brought in Chris Hook, AMD’s former marketing director. Intel plans to produce several generations of GPUs based on the Xe architecture it is developing, starting with data center and supercomputer GPUs.
