Adobe warns of a vulnerability in Flash that could allow attackers to hack into Windows systems remotely. The exploit uses Office files. Adobe will release a patch next week.

On its help pages, Adobe discloses that it is aware of a vulnerability known as CVE-2018-4878. This vulnerability allows attackers to break into Windows computers, and there have been reports of this happening through Office files. It contains malicious Flash content that can take over a PC. The infected files are said to be distributed via email, but it is unclear how many PCs are infected via this method.

While the attacks are said to target Windows users, there are also vulnerabilities in Flash software for the Chrome browser on Linux, macOS, and Chrome OS. The desktop Flash player for Linux is also vulnerable.

According to Adobe, a patch is planned to fix the security vulnerabilities. That software update should be released next week. Flash software has been criticized for many years for its many security vulnerabilities, which is why many browsers now block Flash content by default.
