Developer gets Android 6.0 running on Lumia 525

A developer has managed to install a version of Android 6.0 on the Windows Phone device Lumia 525. However, the software is not yet fully functional, so no version has been released for the general public yet.

The software hack was shown working by a user on the XDA forum, who posted a number of videos for confirmation. According to the developer, who uses the pseudonym ‘banmeifyouwant’, the installation method works on the Lumia 525, but also on the Lumia 520. The installed software is CyanogenMod 13, which is again based on Android 6.0.

In order to install the Android software, the developer first had to uninstall the Windows Phone software, including the bootloader. Then he installed TWRP; custom recovery software commonly used for installing custom Android software. CyanogenMod 13 could then be installed via TWRP.

In theory, it is possible that Android can also be installed on other Lumia smartphones from Nokia or Microsoft. For now, however, only the Lumia 520 and 525 are supported; this probably also has to do with the fact that the Android installation still works anything but flawless. Many of the features are not yet functional, but this may be fixed in a later version. For example, the WiFi and the sound are not yet working.

The installation method for CyanogenMod 13 is not yet publicly available. According to the developer, the plan is to release an installer next weekend, so that interested parties can also install the Android software on their smartphone.
