Activision has indie game pulled from Steam with dmca request

Sci-fi shooter The Orion Project passed a dmca request from Activision from Steam regarding the appearance of two weapons in the game, an automatic shotgun and an automatic rifle. It is unknown when and if the game will be available again.

In a first post on Steam, lead developer David James of indie studio Trek Industries said that “Activision had Orion removed from Steam via a dmca takedown request.” The developers received a message stating that the game uses Orion weapon art from Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. According to Activisions takedown, it would be the M8A7 rifle and the Bal-27 shotgun.

The makers see the only similarity in the sights of both weapons, something that already leads to the necessary commotion in a Reddit topic. In James’s same response to the event, he admits that the sights may look a lot alike, but that they’re so drawn “in homage to real-world weapons.”

In an update, James says he’s been in touch with the weapons designer who now says he feels “terrible” and that he’s “more comfortable changing the weapons” regardless of what Activision decides to do next. As a result, the weapons should in any case be completely visually different.
