Amazon is cutting another 9,000 jobs in the second round of layoffs, including at Twitch
Amazon will lay off 9,000 employees. CEO Andy Jassy confirmed this on Monday. It is the tech and retail giant’s second recent round of layoffs. The company already laid off 18,000 employees in January.
According to Jassy The cuts mainly affect employees of AWS, the PXT team, Amazon’s advertising division and Twitch, the livestreaming platform that Amazon owns. The CEO says Amazon has hired a significant number of new workers in recent years, but the company is looking to reduce costs due to economic uncertainties. The layoffs are part of that. The dismissed employees will receive severance pay, a transitional arrangement for health insurance and external support in finding a new job.
Amazon already made a round of layoffs at the beginning of this year. The company then cut 18,000 jobs. The second round of layoffs comes as more of the company’s teams have completed their analyzes for the near future. However, the teams involved have not yet finished making final decisions on exactly which features will be affected, Amazon says. This must be done by the end of April at the latest. The employees involved will then be informed.
Several tech giants have made layoffs in recent months due to the declining economy. Facebook parent company Meta conducted two rounds of 11,000 and 10,000 employees respectively. Microsoft also laid off thousands of employees in January. Google owner Alphabet also cut 12,000 jobs in January.
