AMD Releases Threadripper PRO CPUs to Consumers in March

AMD will sell its Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors to consumers. The CPUs with up to 64 cores were released last year, but were only available to system builders. AMD also comes with the Ryzen 9 5900 and 7 5800, 65W CPUs for OEMs.

The Threadripper PRO processors will be available at online stores from March, AMD reports. These are the 3995WX, 3975WX and 3955WX, with 64, 32 and 16 cores respectively. The 3945WX with 12 cores, which AMD previously announced, is not mentioned in the list of models that will be available to consumers. AMD has not yet announced prices.

The Threadripper PRO processors are variants of the regular Threadripper 3000 processors that AMD released in early 2020. Both variants use Zen 2 cores. The PRO versions support eight memory channels and 128 PCIe lanes. That is twice as much as with the regular versions. AMD announced its Threadripper PRO CPUs in July last year, but they haven’t been sold separately until now. Only system builders like Lenovo could buy the processors and equip complete systems with them.

To use the Threadripper PRO processors, different motherboards are needed than for the regular variants. Last week, an image of an ASUS WRX80 motherboard appeared online, where the PRO variants fit.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900 and Ryzen 7 5800 for OEMs

AMD is also introducing two new Ryzen 5000 processors. These are 65W variants of the Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 7 5800X, with lower clock speeds and with AMD removing the X from the name. These more energy efficient chips will not be available to consumers and will only be supplied to OEMs for complete systems. In December there was already a rumor about the arrival of these processors.
