Valve is working on three VR games for HTC Vive

Valve is working on three games for the HTC Vive VR headset, which Valve is co-developing. This is apparent from an interview with founder Gabe Newell with various media. The games use the Unity engine and Valve’s own Source 2.

Newell did not release any details about the new games, but according to Gamasutra wanted to say that it developed the Vive because it wanted to make the games. “So one of the questions you might want to ask us is ‘why the hell are you making hardware?’ So now we’re building three VR games. What we can do now is design hardware at the same time as we design software.”

According to Newell, this has the advantage that in addition to the games themselves, Valve has also designed the ways of input and therefore knows better what is possible with the system. “Our impression is that it’s going to allow us to build better entertainment experiences. So the idea isn’t ‘we can make more money making hardware’, because hardware is really traditionally a low-margin business.”

HTC and Valve released the Vive last spring. Valve did make small demos of the technology for the headset in The Lab, but so far have not released full games for the system.
